Ilse Koedooder 14 October 2025

A visit to Stockholm is an absolute must during your holiday in Sweden. The capital effortlessly combines centuries-old charm with modern flair. Stroll through the colorful streets of Gamla Stan, enjoy fresh fish dishes by the water, or discover the city’s many museums and design shops. Surrounded by islands and crystal-clear waters, Stockholm feels like a vibrant yet relaxed day trip during your journey through Sweden.

Sights and attractions

Your city trip to Stockholm starts off right with the many activities the city has to offer, a perfect way to get to know it.

The most visited museum in Scandinavia is the Vasa Museum, where you can admire the only preserved 17th-century warship in the world. Everything in the museum revolves around this remarkable ship, a fascinating visit indeed.

Take a walk through Gamla Stan, the old medieval town, where colorful buildings and cozy cafés transport you to a fairytale past. In the Old Town, you’ll also find Stockholm Cathedral, the Nobel Prize Museum, and of course, the Royal Palace.

The Royal Palace is the official residence of His Majesty the King of Sweden and is open to the public. It’s an experience in itself to wander through this enormous palace with its 600 rooms and 5 museums. A highlight is the Changing of the Guard with the Royal Guards.

The city of Stockholm, made up of 14 islands connected by 57 bridges, is perfect for a boat tour. Enjoy the city from the water. Several tours are available from the city center or out into the archipelago.

You can’t leave Stockholm without visiting Skansen on Royal Djurgården Island. Skansen is the world’s oldest open-air museum and a favorite outing for both tourists and locals. Here you can visit the zoo and explore Sweden in miniature. Skansen is also famous for celebrating Swedish traditions, such as the well-known Midsummer Festival.

The City Hall is worth a visit if only because the world-famous Nobel Banquet is held there each year. The building is 106 meters tall with three spires, a familiar icon on many postcards. Guided tours are available, and from the tower, you’ll have a phenomenal view of the city.

Are you a real ABBA fan? Then you’ll definitely want to visit the ABBA Museum. A modern, interactive museum completely dedicated to the legendary group. Tickets must be purchased in advance for a specific time slot, but once you’re inside, the fun begins!

For a moment of peace, head to the green oasis of Djurgården, where lush parks and shimmering waters take your breath away.

Taste the Swedish cuisine

The Swedish cuisine is a delightful mix of fresh ingredients and traditions rooted in the Scandinavian landscape. During your visit, don’t miss out on the unique flavors and dishes this country has to offer!

  1. Iconic Swedish Dishes

One of the most famous Swedish delicacies is köttbullar, the classic Swedish meatballs, often served with creamy mashed potatoes, lingonberry jam, and rich gravy - true comfort food.

For fish lovers, gravad lax (cured salmon with dill, mustard sauce, and rye bread) is a must-try. Sweden’s long coastline ensures a wealth of fresh seafood, such as herring, prepared in countless ways; pickled, marinated, or smoked.

  2. Smörgåsbord: A Feast for the Senses

No visit to Sweden is complete without a smörgåsbord, a lavish buffet tradition offering a wide variety of dishes. From cold cuts and cheeses to warm meals and desserts, there’s something for everyone. Try Janssons frestelse, a creamy potato gratin with anchovies, or prinsesstårta, a light sponge cake with whipped cream, marzipan, and vanilla cream.

  3. Fika: The Art of the Coffee Break

In Sweden, fika is more than just a coffee break. It’s a cultural ritual. It’s a moment to relax and enjoy coffee or tea with something sweet, such as kanelbullar (cinnamon buns) or semlor, cream-filled buns traditionally eaten before Lent. Visit a local café and experience this cozy Swedish tradition for yourself!

Swedish cuisine revolves around sustainability and seasonal ingredients. From wild berries and mushrooms gathered in vast forests to fresh fish from the Baltic Sea, nature plays a major role in Sweden’s culinary identity. Let yourself be surprised by the pure flavors and warm hospitality of Sweden.

Each season, Stockholm enchants you anew. From sunny summer days to magical snowy landscapes. Let yourself be swept away by the Scandinavian charm of this unforgettable city.
